Pros

  • A pourable Bti liquid made for ponds and water gardens, killing 90 to 100% of mosquito larvae in the water you dose.
  • Safe to add straight to water with koi, frogs, and plants; Bti spares fish and wildlife and targets only larvae.

Cons

  • Like all larvicides it thins next week's population rather than stopping bites now, so keep a repellent handy.
  • You dose by water volume and re-treat on a schedule, and it only helps the water you actually pour it into.

The full review

Liquid Bti larvicide from Microbe-Lift, formulated for decorative ponds, water gardens, fountains, and other ornamental water where mosquitoes breed. You measure a dose into the water, and the same naturally occurring bacterium found in mosquito dunks goes to work killing mosquito and fungus gnat larvae before they can grow into biting adults. Because it is dosed by water volume rather than dropped in as a tablet, it suits larger or moving water features where you want even distribution. This is source control for the water itself, not a repellent for your skin or a spray for the air. A key advantage for pond keepers is that Bti is target-specific and documented as harmless to fish, koi, frogs, plants, birds, pets, and other wildlife, so it can be dosed directly into water that holds fish and aquatic life. It only treats the water you dose, so mosquitoes breeding elsewhere are unaffected.

Scorecard

Effectiveness45%85

Its job is to shrink your yard's mosquito population, and it does it well: it kills roughly 90–100% of the mosquito larvae in the standing water you treat. It stops larvae before they become biting adults, thinning the next generation of mosquitoes around a breeding site. Scored on that larval-control efficacy, discounted only because it reaches the standing water you can find and treat and not the mosquitoes breeding elsewhere (reasonable confidence).

Evidence & honest claims25%55

Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) is well-supported by published evidence, weighted by how close its concentration is to the studied effective dose (base 43). Of 4 marketing claims audited: 3 strong, 1 moderate, 0 weak, 0 unsupported (+12).

Safety15%96

This is a biological larvicide. Its active (Bti) targets only mosquito, black fly, and fungus gnat larvae and is documented safe for fish, pets, birds, bees, and other wildlife by the EPA, WHO, and CDC. It is designed to be placed directly in standing water, so there is no dermal exposure and negligible non-target hazard.

Larval control

This is a larvicide: it kills mosquito larvae in the standing water you treat, stopping them before they become biting adults. It lowers the local population over time but does not stop bites from mosquitoes bred elsewhere.

The band shown is larval control, not personal bite protection. This is the same Bti active as mosquito dunks, delivered as a liquid dosed by water volume, and it is highly effective at killing mosquito and fungus gnat larvae in the water it treats. Coverage is set by dose rather than a fixed surface area (roughly 6 ounces per 2,000 gallons), so the square-foot field is left blank. It lowers the mosquitoes a pond or water garden would otherwise produce, which is real source control, but it does nothing for standing water you do not dose and will not stop adult mosquitoes arriving from elsewhere. Its standout feature for pond owners is non-target safety: Bti is documented as harmless to fish, koi, frogs, plants, birds, pets, and other wildlife, so it can be added directly to water that holds fish.

Claims audit

What the marketing says, versus what the evidence supports.

  • Kills mosquito and fungus gnat larvae in ponds and water gardens

    EfficacyStrong

Accurate. The Bti active kills mosquito and fungus gnat larvae in the treated water. This is larval source control, not skin protection.

  • Will not harm fish, koi, birds, pets, plants or wildlife

    SafetyStrong

Well supported. Bti is target-specific to Nematoceran larvae and is documented as safe for fish and other non-target organisms, which is why it is used in water that holds fish (EPA, NPIC).

  • 6 oz treats up to 2,000 gallons of decorative water

    OtherModerate

A reasonable label dosing measure for a medium water garden. It describes how much water one bottle can dose, not how long control lasts, which depends on reapplication.

  • Natural biological control that is safe for the aquatic environment

    NaturalStrong

Accurate. Bti is a naturally occurring soil bacterium and, unlike pyrethroids, is documented as safe for fish and aquatic invertebrates, which is why it is dosed directly into ponds.
