Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus
p-Menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) — primary active in refined OLE
Does oil of lemon eucalyptus really work?
Yes. It's the only plant-derived active with synthetic-class performance. Refined to 30% (standardized for PMD, its active molecule), it delivers 4–6 hours of complete mosquito protection. Two honest caveats: it underperforms against ticks, and it's not for children under 3.
When to choose it: The pick for people who want plant-derived protection without botanical-grade reapplication. Not for toddlers; not for tick country.
Botanical repellent derived from Corymbia citriodora. PMD (p-menthane-3,8-diol) is the primary active component in many products.
How it works
Repellent activity primarily attributed to PMD content in refined OLE.
Safety around dogs & cats
The registered repellent 'oil of lemon eucalyptus' is a refined, PMD-rich extract, not the raw essential oil, so its pet profile tracks refined PMD: low toxicity in mammals, with residual terpenes that cats clear slowly. Keep it off pets and prevent licking of treated skin. The unrefined lemon eucalyptus essential oil, which is much higher in citronellal, is the more concerning form for cats.

Mosquito protection by concentration: Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus
Complete protection time (dark = lower bound, light = upper bound) on the same 12 h scale used across the site. Modeled from published dose-response data in our research library.
The evidence
Field studies show moderate-duration protection; generally shorter than high-concentration DEET.
- Complete Protection Time of a 30% Citriodiol (oil of lemon eucalyptus) repellent against three species of ticks (ARCTEC trial, NCT03708120)2019RctLimited evidence
A sponsor-run trial (registered as NCT03708120) measuring how long a consumer 30% Citriodiol spray, the refined oil-of-lemon-eucalyptus active, protects skin against three tick species. It is the only skin complete-protection-time tick study for OLE, but its results were never independently published.
- Evaluation of standard field and laboratory methods to compare protection times of the topical repellents PMD and DEET2018Field TrialWell-supported evidence
An open-access study asking a methodological question: how well do laboratory arm-in-cage tests predict real-world field protection? It tested identical 15% PMD and 15% DEET solutions on the same volunteers in both settings.
- Efficacy of some wearable devices compared with spray-on insect repellents for Aedes aegypti2017LabWell-supported evidence
Prompted by the Zika outbreak, this study compared eleven products, five sprays, five wearable devices, and a candle, for how well they reduced Aedes aegypti drawn to a person in a wind tunnel. The wearables mostly failed.
- The efficacy of some commercially available insect repellents for Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus2015LabWell-supported evidence
A lab comparison of eight over-the-counter repellents, two fragrances, and a vitamin B1 skin patch, measuring how much each reduced mosquito attraction to a treated hand. DEET and lemon eucalyptus lasted; most botanicals and the patch did little.
- PMD, a Registered Botanical Mosquito Repellent with Deet-Like Efficacy2006Field TrialWell-supported evidence
Carroll and Loye's case that PMD, the refined lemon-eucalyptus active, performs like DEET and deserved its 2005 CDC endorsement. It combines a review of PMD across mosquito genera with the authors' own field and lab trials.

Common misconceptions
Myth: “It's the same as lemon eucalyptus essential oil.”
Reality: No, and the difference matters. EPA-registered OLE is refined and standardized for PMD content. Undiluted 'lemon eucalyptus essential oil' in a DIY spray has neither the standardization nor the registration, and far less evidence.
Myth: “Natural means fine for babies.”
Reality: OLE/PMD is specifically not recommended for children under 3, one of the clearest examples of 'natural' and 'gentle' being different claims.
Regulatory notes
EPA-registered when formulated as OLE with specified PMD content. Not a FIFRA 25(b) minimum risk active.
Safety notes
Not recommended for children under 3 per CDC guidance for OLE-based products.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between OLE and PMD?
PMD (p-menthane-3,8-diol) is the active molecule; oil of lemon eucalyptus is the refined plant extract standardized to contain it. Synthesized PMD appears in some products and performs equivalently at equal concentrations.
How long does it last?
About 4–6 hours of complete mosquito protection at 30%, comparable to 20–25% DEET in head-to-head testing.
Does it repel ticks?
Weakly. Published tick protection is short (under 2 hours) and unreliable. Choose picaridin or IR3535 if ticks are the threat.
