Thermacell and the OFF! Clip-On belong to a category the research calls spatial repellents: instead of putting chemistry on your skin, they warm a pad to release a pyrethroid vapor (metofluthrin or allethrin) that repels mosquitoes across a zone around you. Unlike ultrasonic gadgets, these have real evidence behind them. The catch is that the zone is smaller and more fragile than the marketing suggests.
What the evidence shows
In controlled field trials, metofluthrin and allethrin emanators cut mosquito landing sharply, with reductions often reported in the 70 to 97 percent range, and an expert review of spatial repellents put the best devices near the top of that band. A rechargeable Thermacell is rated for roughly a 15 to 20 foot zone; the classic butane Patio Shield for about 15 feet. That is real coverage for a patio or campsite.
The two big caveats
Wind is the enemy: the protective vapor drifts and thins in any breeze, so these work best in still air. And the headline percentages come from controlled trials, not a windy backyard, so treat them as a best case rather than a guarantee.
Thermacell vs the OFF! Clip-On
The Clip-On is a personal version: a battery fan wafts metofluthrin around one person. It helps, but its range collapses within a few tenths of a meter, and independent testing found it protected for closer to two hours than the twelve on the box. A patio Thermacell protects a real seating area; a clip-on protects a small personal cloud. Pick the one that matches whether you are sitting still or moving around.
A note on pets
The pyrethroids in these devices (metofluthrin, allethrin) are highly toxic to fish and to cats at close contact, so keep the device away from aquariums and ponds and out of reach of a curious cat. Outdoor use at a distance is the intended, lower-risk way to run them.
