Summary

This study, run in experimental huts and open field settings in Siaya County in western Kenya, tested a metofluthrin emanator against Anopheles funestus, a major malaria mosquito. What makes it especially useful is that this local mosquito population is pyrethroid-resistant, meaning it has evolved to shrug off the pyrethroid insecticides used on bed nets and in sprays. The researchers wanted to know whether an airborne metofluthrin device could still protect people even when the mosquitoes are resistant to that chemical class, measuring how many mosquitoes landed indoors and at increasing distances outdoors.

Key findings

The emanator produced a near-complete reduction in indoor mosquito landing, and outdoors it cut landing to roughly a tenth of the untreated rate, about ten times fewer mosquitoes landing, within about ten feet of the device. Encouragingly, it kept working against a mosquito population that is already resistant to pyrethroids, which suggests that delivering a volatile pyrethroid into the air as a repellent can still drive mosquitoes off even where the same chemistry has lost its killing punch on nets. For a buyer, this is good evidence that a quality emanator retains real value in areas where sprays and treated nets are fading.

Limitations

The strong numbers apply indoors and within a short outdoor radius of roughly ten feet, and protection dropped off with distance, so this is once again a small treated zone rather than a whole-yard shield. It is a malaria-vector research study using experimental huts and controlled field layouts, which are more sheltered and standardized than a typical open backyard, and outdoor performance still hinges on calm air. The work targeted one Anopheles species in one region, and repelling mosquitoes away from a device is not the same as measuring reduced disease in the surrounding community.
