A small neoprene wristband made for children, sold with replaceable pellets that slowly release a blend of plant essential oils and marketed as a DEET-free, skin-free way to keep mosquitoes off kids. Unlike the ultrasonic gadgets, this band does put a real scent into the air, so it is doing something in the small pocket of air right around the wrist. The trouble is the format, not the oils. Children are bitten on ankles, arms, the neck, the face, and anywhere skin is uncovered, and a scented band on one wrist cannot surround a moving child with enough repellent vapor to protect the whole body. A comparative repellent trial in the New England Journal of Medicine tested repellent-impregnated wristbands directly and found they offered essentially no protection against bites, while skin-applied repellent lasted for hours. Public-health guidance from the University of Sydney makes the same point for parents: stickers and wristbands are not a reliable way to prevent bites. The band is pleasant and harmless to wear, but controlled evidence does not support it as whole-body protection for a child.
