Summary

Field trial of citronella candles and incense against wild Aedes mosquitoes.

Key findings

Subjects near 3% citronella candles received 42% fewer bites than unprotected controls (6.2 versus 10.8 bites per 5 min), but 5% citronella incense performed no better than a plain candle.

Limitations

Small woodlot trial with modest, short-range protection, and the incense benefit was not distinguishable from a plain flame.
