Summary

Laboratory dose-response bioassays of Juniperus communis (and J. chinensis, Cupressus funebris) essential oils for repellency against adult Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and host-seeking nymphs of Amblyomma americanum and Ixodes scapularis ticks.

Key findings

Juniperus communis oil was repellent to both tick species and to Aedes aegypti, with a minimum effective dosage estimate of 0.029 mg/cm2 against Ae. aegypti — nearly as potent as DEET in this assay.

Limitations

Laboratory cloth/skin-patch bioassay measuring minimum effective dose, not human complete-protection-time or field trial; single study; longevity not established.
