This review gathered decades of studies, spanning 1944 to 2018, on insecticide barrier treatments, the residual sprays applied to vegetation and structures around a property to control mosquitoes. Rather than run a new experiment, the authors synthesized what the accumulated evidence says about how well these treatments work, how long they last, and how performance differs between active ingredients. For a buyer thinking about a yard-spray program, the most useful question it addresses is how many weeks of protection one treatment realistically buys.
Key findings
The review found that barrier treatments can retain significant efficacy for up to about six weeks after application, which is roughly the reapplication cadence many spray services quote. It also showed that residual knockdown and mortality vary a lot by which active is used and how it is measured. Longer-lasting pyrethroids such as lambda-cyhalothrin held meaningful knockdown and mortality further out in time than shorter-lived options, while bifenthrin's strongest effect was more front-loaded and deltamethrin faded faster in the cited work. The practical takeaway is that a barrier spray is not a set-and-forget fix, it is a treatment that decays over weeks and needs periodic reapplication, and the specific active ingredient matters for how long it keeps working.
Limitations
This is a synthesis of studies that used different mosquito species, formulations, surfaces, and testing methods over more than 70 years, so the pooled picture is uneven and the six-week figure is a general ceiling rather than a guarantee for any one product. Residual duration is heavily affected by rain, sunlight, and the surface sprayed, none of which a single headline number captures. As a review of area treatments, it also does not resolve the broader concerns about non-target insect harm and about resistance building when residual pyrethroids are used repeatedly.
