Pros

  • Nothing hidden and nice to carry: a beeswax and olive oil stick that goes on like a balm, no spray and no fumes.

Cons

  • It barely works: the waxy base holds the oils against your skin instead of releasing them, so real protection is more like 6 to 12 minutes.
  • The 2-hour reapply label oversells how long it actually lasts.
  • Lemongrass oil at 3.25% carries a real sensitization risk, so patch-test before wider use.

The full review

Pleasant to carry and fully transparent about its botanicals, this balm stick rates as a situational pick at best, because as a repellent it barely functions. A wax and beeswax base holds its oils against the skin instead of letting them volatilize, so our model puts complete mosquito protection at roughly 6 to 12 minutes and the effectiveness pillar all but bottoms out. The maker's 2-hour reapply interval reads as an overpromise against how briefly it works. Safety is the other problem, driven mainly by lemongrass oil's high sensitization risk at 3.25% plus irritation and a pregnancy caution. To its credit it is a fully disclosed FIFRA 25(b) formula with nothing hidden, and it goes on cleanly with no spray or fumes, but it does not keep bugs off for long.

Mosquitoes: 0.1–0.2 h of complete protection. Ticks: 0–0.2 h of complete protection. Protection times are modeled from the actives, concentration, and format (see methodology). Scored on a saturating curve (each added hour counts less than the last), 65% mosquito / 35% tick, with reasonable confidence.

Evidence & honest claims25%51

Castor oil is well-supported by published evidence, weighted by how close its concentration is to the studied effective dose (base 56). Of 4 marketing claims audited: 2 strong, 1 moderate, 1 weak, 0 unsupported (-1). Labels a reapplication interval (~every 2 h) longer than its measured protection — an overpromise (−4).

From published dermal toxicology (EPA/CIR/IFRA), scaled by each active's concentration against its leave-on limit: high skin-sensitization risk from Lemongrass oil at 3.25% (−18); moderate irritation risk from Lemongrass oil at 3.25% (−6); caution advised in pregnancy (−6); moderate aquatic toxicity (−4).

How long it protects

Complete protection ends when the first bite gets through; partial protection keeps reducing bites as repellency decays. EPA label times are verified; the rest are modeled from the actives, concentration, and format.

Complete protection Best case (range top) Partial protection (decaying) Minimal / unproven
Mosquito estimate basis (low confidence)

Estimated complete protection time from active ingredient + concentration; the source research used a lotion-style formulation, matching this balm (no format adjustment). Partial protection (reduced but real bite suppression) is modeled to extend to ~0.4 h as repellency decays. No measured CPT below 10% for this active — estimated via sigmoid dose-response (×0.17 of Luker 2023 (10% lotion, CPT > 30 min)).

How to apply it

Rub the balm onto exposed skin. It can be applied to the face, but keep it away from eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Do not let children apply the product themselves and avoid applying to their hands to prevent accidental ingestion. Reapply about every 2 hours as needed. Apply to skin only (not tested on fabric) and store in a cool, dark place to prevent melting.
